AUTUMN TERM 2009

New term...New site!
Hi and welcome back to the Autumn Term. There will now be a ‘one-stop shop’ for all weekly information and curriculum support for Year Three and Four. This means that the only site that you need to check each week from now on, will be the new school website.

How do I access the new site? Go to http://www.stvincentsprimary.co.uk/ and click on Year Groups. This is on a menu bar on the left hand side of the screen. Click on Year 3 or Year 4 and this will take you to the homepages. If you scroll down on the homepage, you will find an outline of what we will be covering this week in class and a general overview of all the topics we are doing this year.

What about links to websites? You will be able to access recommended websites, by clicking on the Curriculum link on the Year 3 or 4 homepage and then clicking on the links for each topic. The links section also contains general links for literacy, numeracy, science and general sites. All of the links will be added to as time goes on and new topics are covered.

There are many other parts of the site to explore, but the only way to see everything that is available so far, is to go and look!

All year groups in school are now using the school web site.

Thanks again and welcome to the new school year.

May we take this opportunity to thank you for all your support during this transition period and always. Take care and have a good week!

6th July

Welcome to this week's blog spot. Sport's day with the new organisation was very successful and we have had lots of positive feedback from parents and children. We had a vote in assembly last week and the children have voted to keep this style of Sport's day next year too. The weather was really kind to us and we all had a great time.

CHESTER ZOO TRIP

We are going to Chester zoo this Thursday and thank you to all the volunteers who want to come. We will let you know this week if we need you and of course the groups for the day. You will receive another final letter this week about wearing suitable clothing for the weather and having a drink, sun cream and a little money to spend for extra drinks etc. We will be leaving school about 9 am and will leave the zoo at 3pm. We expect to be back for 3.45pm. Please make sure that you contact any after school carers/clubs of the late return this day.Hopefully the weather will be lovely again!! Please send any more slips into school as soon as possible.

There will be no homework for the last two weeks as there is so much going on with discos, concerts and the BBQ.

Dates for the diary

Monday 29th June

Welcome to this week's blog spot. The weeks are flying by and the children are still working hard.

SPORT'S DAY

Please remember that we have our Sport's day on Wednesday and we have been having a practice too last week. We are organising it differently this year and your child should have given you a letter with details of the new arrangements.

The children have been put into three teams and these teams will compete against each other and will be made up of all the age ranges in Key Stage Two. The organisation is going to change dramatically. There will be twelve events in a circle on the field and every child will be able to have a go at all of them. The children will have about five minutes on each event then move onto the next with part of their team. Each of the teams: YELLOW team, RED team and BLUE team can wear a tee shirt of that colour. There will be lots of seats available for adults to sit on.

Red team will comprise of Mrs H’s Y3 / Miss R’s Y4 / Miss W’s Y5 / Mr T’s Y6

Blue Team will comprise of Mrs B’s Y3 / Mrs H’s Y4 / Mr S’s Y5 / Miss W’s 6

Yellow Team will comprise of Miss R’s Y3 / Mrs B’s Y4 / Mr T’s Y5 / Mr S’s Y6

The children absolutely love Sport's day and we hope that it will go ahead again this year, (weather permitting as usual)! Please make sure that you child has the correct size pumps and provide them with a tee shirt and school blue shorts. Also sending in suntan lotion, named water bottles and a hat is a good idea too as, fingers crossed, I am sure we are going to be blessed with some more sunshine!

This will be the final week for the homework as things are getting really busy.

The children should have spellings, numeracy task. reading and also the time machine homework. It is the last activity on the time machine homework sheet.

HOMEWORK – WEEK SEVEN

Write the story of the last few days ....how do you feel...do you feel excited or sad? What souvenirs are you going to take back? Why do you have to leave the place? What happens when you get back into the time machine? Do you get home safely? Do you go onto have another adventure at a different place?

ZOO TRIP

The children should have come home last week about the trip to Chester zoo on July 9th.
The cost of the trip will be £15 which includes entrance to the zoo and also the cost of the coach. We will be only leaving the zoo at 3pm on this day so please be aware of this. We expect to get back to school at 3.45pm approximately.

LITERACY

In Literacy this week we will be reviewing how to uplevel and improve our sentences, especially using the different punctuation we have been investigating over the last couple of weeks. We will also be looking back at our Big Writes adn thinking of some targets that the children would like to set themselves as they begin to think of moving up into their next Year.

http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/interactive/literacy2.htm#grammar

NUMERACY

Mrs Harding's group will continue with the four rules and be reviewing fractions of quantities and cancelling down fractions and equivalent fractions.

We are reviewing lots of level four concepts as well as concepts that the children struggled with in the recent exams.

Monday 22nd June

Welcome to this week's blog spot.

What a wonderful day we had! The Year Three had a lovely day on Saturday at their Holy Communion and were very well behaved especially when waiting for their photographs to be taken. All the children looked fantastic and did great with their readings. We all hope that you enjoyed the rest of the day with your families.

Please remember that St Joseph's children's Mass starts at 10.30 every Sunday. We must say a big thank you to all the people who walked up to church and all the help from all the people both at school and parents who do jobs too. Thank you to the Year Four parent who came in to set up the hall on Friday afternoon as it looked beautiful.

THERE WILL BE NO SWIMMING THIS WEEK AS SANKEY FORUM HAVE HAD A POWER FAILURE FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS. THEY HAVE CONTACTED SCHOOL TO CANCEL OUR SWIMMING LESSONS.

Sport's Day

This coming week we hope to get busy with our preparations for Sport's day on July 1st.

We are going to put the children into three teams and these teams will compete against each other and will be made up of all the age ranges in Key Stage Two. There will be a letter sent out shortly with more details on.

The children absolutely love Sport's day and we hope that it will go ahead again this year, (weather permitting as usual)!

Please make sure that you child has the correct size pumps and provide them with a white tee shirt and school blue shorts. Also sending in suntan lotion, named water bottles and a hat is a good idea too as, fingers crossed, I am sure we are going to be blessed with some more sunshine!

Best Work

The children will be choosing some special work from their books that will be put into a best work book and brought home at the end of the year so that you can see the standard of work that they are completing at the end of this academic year. The children always love looking through all their books to find suitable pieces and are always amazed at how much they have come on throughout the year.

LITERACY

This week we will continue studying stories that contain a dilemma and raise issues - such as bullying and injustice. Children will write critically about the issue in the story and explain the problem and will also write alternative solutions to the problem. We will also continue to explore other punctuation marks such as dashes and hyphens.

Monday 15th of June

Welcome to this week's blog spot. There is a very busy week ahead with Holy Communion this weekend. The Year Three children have been practising a lot.

The children are really excited about their day on the 20th of June. Please remember we need some Year 4 parents to set up the hall in preparation for the Saturday Holy Communion. This will be on the Friday afternoon 19th June.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE DAY

9.00 Arrive at Canon Malane centre for medals etc. You do not need to stay with your child.

9.30 Children process into church and take seats. There will be five seats with you child's name on.

After Mass the children need to be taken back to St Vincent's.

There will be individual and a group photograph taken as soon as the children arrive. Please send them straight into the Infant area. Thank you.

The children will then enjoy sharing their Communion Breakfast with each other. After this the certificates are handed out.

Can the boys please leave their sashes in school at the end?

That just leaves us to offer up all our prayers for the Year Three children at this very special event in their lives.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE CHILDREN CAN GO TO 10.30am MASS ON THE SUNDAY DRESSED IN THEIR COMMUNION CLOTHES. THERE ARE REFRESHMENTS AFTER TOO.
On the 16th of June we will have our Away day for the Year 3 children who are making their Holy Communion. You should have received a letter about this. Please return the slips as soon as possible. The children should already know what food they need to bring with them. We will be staying up at church/centre all day. There will be a short service for families to attend at 2.30pm. You will be able to take your child with you at the end of the service. We will need people to walk up with us and also on Friday morning too when we are having a practice in church. We usually start to walk back from church this day at 10.30am.

CHANGES TO DINNER MONEY
From Monday 15 June 2009 the responsibility of the cash collection will transfer to the catering service. This means that the collection of dinner money will transfer from the school office to the Catering Supervisor. This system currently operates successfully in a number of primary schools. We are introducing a ‘cash on the day’ system whereby school meals £1.95 are paid to the Catering Supervisor at lunchtime on a daily basis. Your child will need a purse/ wallet clearly marked with your Child’s name. The ‘cash on the day’ system will not affect pupils in receipt of Free School Meals or parents / guardians who pay for their children’s meals by the Direct Debit system. Both systems will continue to operate alongside the ‘cash on the day’ system. You will no longer pay for the week on a Monday and can opt in and out on a daily basis. If you presently pay for meals termly we would recommend you join the direct debit scheme. If you wish to pay for your meals by direct debit please contact Vicky Parr on 01925 442227.

WALKING BUS

Mrs Horne is beginning to prepare for September with regards to numbers for the scheme. If anyone is interested in using the scheme from September 2009 please complete an application form and consent form which can be found in the leaflet dispensers. Please hand it back to the office by Friday 3 July. Mrs Horne would also be grateful to those already using the scheme, if they could inform here of their intentions from September. Thank you.
FOSV – CAKE SALE

Cake Sale takes place on Friday 26th June at 3.00 pm in school. All welcome. On Saturday 27 June the Friends of St Vincent’s have organised a supermarket bagging at Morrisons in Widnes.

HOMEWORK

We will be sending out homework this week.

Spellings

WEEK FIVE
You find an object in the time that you are visiting. Make sure that it is realistic to the time that you are visiting. For example you would not find a jet ski in the time of the dinosaurs. Where did you find it?
Will you take it with you?
Write and draw about it.
LITERACY

This week we will be focusing on stories with a dilemma. Initially children will need to know what a dilemma is and we will relate this to their own experiences. By Friday the Yr 4 children will write their own story with a dilemma in the Big Write. We will also be finding out about when to use the two punctuation marks - the colon and the semi-colon.

Literacy - Poetry

This week we are studying and writing two forms of poetry - Haiku Poems (Japanese poems) and Kennings Poems. Both these style of poems have a simple structure and focus on using well thought out vocabulary and in Haiku poetry - the correct number of syllables. I'm sure we will have fun exploring and writing our own poerty. As well as this we will be reviewing the use of the apostrophe for missing out letters (contractions) and for possession/ belongs to = 's .
